Some years ago the U.S. Department of Labor’s Dictionary of Occupational Titles was
in use and defined the profession or occupation of hypnotherapist as: Hypnotherapist-
“induces hypnotic state in client to increase motivation or alter behavior patterns.
Prepares client to enter hypnotic state by explaining how hypnosis works and what
client will experience. Tests subject to determine degrees of physical and emotional
suggestibility. Induces hypnotic state in client using individualized methods and
techniques of hypnosis based on interpretation of test results and analysis of client’s
problem. May train client in self hypnosis conditioning.” The Identification number
assigned was 079.157-010.
Even though the dictionary is no longer being published, O*NET has taken over the
classification process and has classified hypnotherapists in the "Therapists, all other
(29-1129.99)" category.
The insurance industry still acknowledges hypnotherapy as a viable adjunct to traditional
health and wellness modalities and some insurance may pay for hypnotherapy services
using insurance CPT Code 90880 and the Description of Service Hypnosis/Single Session,
ICDA943-2 , and DSM Code 300.02.
